About Climate Action Science
Our Vision
We believe that it requires a new level of academic, public, and private cooperation in climate research to contribute to a better understanding of how information on greenhouse gas emissions can be enhanced and visualized and how this information affects climate action.

Therefore, an interdisciplinary team of researchers at the University Heidelberg we have developed a inter- and transdisciplinary research project, which combines empirical findings in atmospheric physics and geography on the sources of greenhouse gas emissions with social and economic sciences to understand where emissions come from and how knowledge about emissions impacts climate action. In doing so, we focus on the sub-national and local levels to test whether high resolution climate data can lead to strengthened actions on the individual, societal, and governance level.

Climate Action Science constitutes the academic counterpart to the international cooperation between Baden-Württemberg and California, as well as the Under2 Coalition. The Under2Coaltion was founded in 2015 by the states of California (USA) and Baden-Württemberg (Germany). It has grown to a worldwide alliance of more than 200 partners for subnational climate action. On September 15th, 2018, California and Baden-Württemberg signed a sister state agreement to foster their partnership with the key elements climate policies and science.
Climate change knows no boundaries. Therefore, we build academic bridges. Across disciplines and across the globe.

Our interdisciplinary research focuses on high-resolution GHG emissions information and how such information is and could be connected to changes in individual, social, economic, and political perceptions and actions in the field of climate change mitigation. We collaborate with more action-oriented projects that seek to provide actionable data and spatial indicators to key stakeholders, such as the Climate Action project at HeiGit.
